In order to receive DISH Network programming, you have to have a system that captures the signal being beamed from a satellite and transmits it to your TV. Here's what a DISH Network system consists of and where you can get one free.

The Broadcast Center


The DISH Network broadcast center pays television companies like HBO, ABC, and CNN for the right to broadcast their programs. The broadcast center receives programs from these companies then beams them up to a satellite.

The Satellite

DISH Network currently has 10 satellites in stationary orbit more than 22,000 miles above the earth. These satellites pick up the signal from the broadcast center and beam them back down to earth.

The Dish

In the early 1990's , satellite dishes were huge monstrosities that were up to nine feet in diameter. You can still see some of these dishes rusting away in backyards today.

Today, thanks to advances in DBS (direct broadcast satellite) technology, satellites are now smaller than a saucer sled - 18" to 31" in diameter.

A dish has two functions: 1. It captures the signal being sent from a satellite, and 2. It amplifies that signal using the feedhorn that sits in front of the dish, and sends it to a receiver.

The Receiver

The receiver performs a number of functions. It processes the satellite signal into audio and video signals and sends it to your TV. In addition to processing the signal, it allows you change channels.

The newer DISH Network receivers also let you:

* Record TV programs with the push of a button, and store them in your receiver's hard drive

* Pause live TV so you can answer the phone or get a drink then resume your show when you're ready

* Watch programs broadcast in HD (high definition), and listen to them in digital surround sound

* Restrict the shows you don't want your kids to watch by using parental control locks

Where to Get a Free System

In order to get a free DISH Network satellite TV system that includes a dish, receivers, and free installation, you have to order one of their program packages. Prices for these packages start at .99 for 40 channels, and go up to .99 for 350 channels.
