Dr. Alanna Joy Toll, a daughter of Wende and Leslie Toll of Merion Station, Pa., is to be married on Sunday afternoon to Jeffrey Jay Schwartz, a son of Hannah and Charles Schwartz of Plainview, N.Y. Rabbi Yosie Levine is to perform the ceremony at the Sephardic Temple in Cedarhurst, N.Y.

The bride, 28, will continue to use her name professionally. She is a veterinarian employed by the Riverdale Veterinary Group in the Bronx. She graduated from Barnard and received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Her parents own Toll’s Jewelers, a shop in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.

The bridegroom, 40, works in Manhattan as a director in bond trading for the securities and investment banking division of Barclays, the British bank. He also graduated from Penn, and has an M.B.A. from Columbia.

His mother retired as a reading instructor at Public School 144 in Forest Hills, Queens, where she had previously taught, mainly the second grade. His father, who is retired, worked in Manhattan as a vice president and the head of the department at National Westminster Bank that handled clients dealing in wholesale diamonds and jewelry.

Mr. Schwartz met his future mother-in-law in August 2005, long before setting eyes upon Dr. Toll herself. Her parents had gone on an Alaskan cruise to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary, and Mr. Schwartz was on the same boat.

They met doing workouts in the gym. As Wende Toll recalled, “I noticed that he was wearing a Penn sweatshirt and since my daughter was then a student at the Penn vet school, I asked if he went there. I also asked if he was having a good time and had he met anyone.”

She remembers him saying, speaking for himself and a buddy on the trip: “We’re meeting nice people, but we’re always looking to meet others.”

“So,” the bride’s mother said, “I mentioned that my daughter had friends in New York and she was nice about fixing people up.”

Mr. Schwartz gave her his card.

Dr. Toll took it and made the first telephone call. “My mother hasn’t set me up that much, so I was curious,” she said. “We spoke on the phone but I was living in Philadelphia and he was in New York, so we decided not to go out.”

A year and a half later, they found themselves at the same New Year’s Eve party. “We met a moment after midnight,” Dr. Toll said. “He was attending the party with someone I had been set up with for a couple of dates, and they both came over to wish me a happy New Year. The three of us started talking, and Jeff said, ‘I think I met your parents.’ ”

“He was adorable,” Dr. Toll remembered.

Their first date took place on Jan. 13. “That was the start of all things good, and I knew pretty quickly,” Mr. Schwartz said.

As for her own role in bringing the couple together, Wende Toll said, “Being a mother I am always trying. It is a difficult world today, and if I can introduce people to each other, that is my greatest pleasure. This is the third match I’ve made.”
