When you have a set grocery list it is also easier to escape the grocery with only necessary goods, and leave the extras behind. The first time you try this it might take some getting used to, but soon enough you will come to enjoy the organized nature of this method.
Another benefit to Meal Planning is that it allows you to make fewer trips to the grocery store and ultimately cuts down on the "Snack Aisle" purchases. This practice really simplifies the grocery shopping experience as well as the budget planning.
